Candle Care 101: How to Get the Most Out of Your Candle

There’s nothing quite like the warm glow and comforting fragrance of a candle. Whether you light one to set the mood, unwind after a long day, or simply to fill your space with a beautiful scent, taking care of your candle is essential for safety, performance, and longevity.

At The Velvet Noble, we believe candles are more than just décor - they’re an experience. To help you get the most out of every burn, here are our top candle care tips:

1. The First Burn is the Most Important

When you light your candle for the very first time, let it burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt from edge to edge. This prevents tunneling - that frustrating situation where wax builds up along the sides and wastes your candle. A good rule of thumb: burn one hour for every inch in diameter of the candle.

2. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Always trim your wick to about ¼ inch before lighting. This helps your candle burn cleanly and evenly, reduces smoke, and prevents the wick from “mushrooming” (those little carbon balls that form on the tip). A wick trimmer works best, but scissors or even nail clippers will do in a pinch.

3. Don’t Burn Too Long

We know it’s tempting to leave your candle glowing all day, but for the best performance (and safety!), limit burns to about 3–4 hours at a time. This keeps the wax from overheating, protects the vessel, and maintains the fragrance quality.

4. Protect Your Surface

Always place your candle on a heat-safe surface, away from drafts, vents, and direct sunlight. This not only prevents uneven burning but also keeps your candle from catching stray particles or debris.

5. Safety First, Always

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

Final Thought: A Ritual of Care

Candle care isn’t just about maintenance - it’s about creating a ritual. By following these simple tips, you’ll enjoy a longer-lasting, cleaner, and safer burn every time.

So the next time you light your favorite Velvet Noble candle, know that you’re not just enjoying a fragrance - you’re preserving a little piece of luxury. ✨
